An unranked Florida women’s basketball team took down No. 11 LSU 73-72 on Sunday, earning their second ranked win in as many games.

The Gators never led by more than nine points and were never down by more than five as the two teams played evenly throughout the game. In a game that saw 13 lead changes and 10 ties, it came down to free throws to decide the winner. Zippy Broughton nailed two to seal the win for Florida.

The two teams entered the half tied at 33 points apiece. LSU came out strong to start the third and gained the edge with 25 points to the Gators’ 21 in the third. But Florida closed out strong, outscoring the Tigers 19-14 in the final frame.

LSU shot 43.1 percent as a team but were outpaced in 3-point percentage, shooting just 1-of-9 (11.1 percent) to Florida’s 6-of-17 (35.3 percent).

Khayla Pointer accounted for nearly half of the Tigers’ points, setting a career-high 35 points. No other LSU player scored in double-digits. Autumn Newby had six points and 11 assists.

“It was a game where they started out tougher, more physical guarding us,” said LSU coach Kim Mulkey. “We hung in there. We battled. I thought Khayla Pointer almost single handedly won the game for us.”

Florida was led by Kiara Smith with 23 points. Jordyn Merritt added 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals while Broughton had 14 points.

The two teams will play once again on Feb. 20 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
