The 11th-ranked Michigan Wolverines took down No. 8 Maryland 69-49 on Sunday behind an impressive defensive performance and junior guard Maddie Nolan’s sharpshooting.

Michigan took a 34-19 lead into the half after Maryland scored just three points in the second quarter, the fewest in a single quarter in program history. No Maryland player reached double-digit scoring in the game — Angel Reese and Chloe Bibby led the Terrapins with nine points each. Michigan also out-rebounded Maryland on the defensive glass 24-13.

Nolan led all scorers with 21 points and matched a career-high with seven 3-pointers made, including three in the first quarter to extend Michigan’s lead. Leigha Brown and Lailia Phelia added 15 and 11 points, respectively, for Michigan.

The Wolverines, who entered the game 1-10 all-time against Maryland, handed the Terrapins their worst loss since 2019 and brought their nation-leading 31-game home win streak to an end.

Terrapins head coach Brenda Frese was coaching with a heavy heart after her father passed away from prostrate cancer earlier in the day.

“I felt like this is where he would want me to be,” Frese said after the game. “I mean, he’s my heart. I think a big piece of who I am, obviously, as a coach and motivating, he’s always been that.

“But I’m really glad that he’s in a better place because he suffered at the end. Cancer sucks, as we all know, so definitely in a better place.”

Maryland will look to rebound against Ohio State on Thursday, while Michigan is back in action the same day against Wisconsin.
