After lamenting their busted brackets, the discussion turns to UConn Huskies guard Azzi Fudd. Is a healthy Fudd this year’s secret NCAA tournament weapon?

“I think my biggest one that I was like, ‘whoa,’ was UConn,” O'Hara said of Connecticut’s first-round blowout.

“UConn by 69!" marvels Diaz. "We do have to talk about miss Azzi Fudd. 21 points in the first half of that game.”

"Is that why you wore the shirt?" asks O'Hara, pointing to Fudd's face emblazoned on Diaz's Round 21 t-shirt.

"Of course!" says Diaz. "We gotta show love to Azzi Fudd."

“We said if she shows up, she will be a differentiator for this team going deep into March Madness,” echoed Mathias.

All in all, the co-hosts tackle the NWSL's top weekend goals, followed by the future debut of World Sevens Football, Trinity Rodman and Ben Shelton's hard launch, and so much more.

'Sports Are Fun!' hosts debate NWSL Rookie of the Year odds

Later, the hosts put on their soccer hats to discuss the NWSL Rookie of the Year. With younger players joining the league — coupled with the abolishment of the college draft — what subsequently even counts as a true rookie season anymore?

"People are already starting to have these these chats about who's up for Rookie of the Year," starts O'Hara. "My take is this: When is Rookie of the Year going to no longer exist? Because like you said, [Seattle goal-scorer] Jordyn Bugg is technically in her second year. But in my opinion, she's still a rookie."

"These players who are showing up to the league as teenagers, not coming out of college, their chances of Rookie of the Year are greatly diminished," she continues. "Are we going to get a Under-20 Player of the Year award at some point?"

"It's a conversation to be had. But it's also the evolution of the game," says Mathias. "If you want to enter the league at such a young age, it signals, 'I'm willing to forsake like Rookie of the Year awards to be able to develop my game in this environment.'"

"You want to go to college and run that route, that is your reward for taking that time, feeling a bit more able to take on the pressure, the demands," she adds. "So you get rewarded with things like Rookie of the Year and allowing your stock to grow."

And in today's episode, the crew is taking the NCAA selection committee to task as they hash out this year's March Madness bracket and everything that went down on Selection Sunday.

"We had selection Sunday yesterday, that was very exciting," O'Hara said, introducing the topic to the group. "So the overall number one seed was UCLA, correct? Is anyone surprised about that?"

"Yes," Mathias answered immediately. "I just think it's interesting that USC drops to like the fourth number one seed when they gave UCLA both their losses. The math's not adding up."

"Did you see coach Dawn Staley's reaction?" asked Diaz. "She didn't agree. There were many coaches who didn't agree with their own standing."

"Honestly — and I've said this before," said BJ. "I don't understand how they do this. I looked into it too last night and I was like, This is still not making sense to me. Let's just play basketball.'"

The one thing they can agree on? UConn potentially meeting USC in the Elite Eight would be an electric matchup.

"I think USC-UConn in the Elite Eight is going to be absolutely electric," said O'Hara. "

"Oh yeah," agreed Mathias. "That's like a semifinal. That's like a Final Four moment."

"And UConn being a No. 2 seed, they're like, 'Yeah give it to us. Let's freaking go,'" O'Hara continued. "You know they're probably ready to absolutely demolish people along the way. And USC only beat UConn by two points earlier this season."

Texas star Madison Booker talks March Madness on 'Sports Are Fun!'

Who better to shed light on the upcoming NCAA tournament than Texas women's college basketball star Madison Booker? The Longhorns' leading scorer and SEC Player of the Year later joins the crew to talk all things March Madness, including how she's gearing up to enter the tournament as a No. 1 seed.

"We figured the best way to go over selection Sunday — because we have some people here who literally know nothing about it, um BJ, not to throw you under the bus — is having you, a No. 1 seed come on and talk to us about it," O'Hara said, introducing this week's Sports Are Fun! guest. "So how were you feeling yesterday going to selection Sunday? Were you confident you guys were getting that No. 1 seed?"

"Not that I didn't care, but you know, if we got the No. 1 seed, we got it. But you know, if we were a two seed, then hey, it's it's ball time," Booker responded nonchalantly. "I felt like we deserved a one seed — We protected home court, I think that's really what secured that one seed."

"And also our away season was was kind of hectic this year," she continued. "We went to some Big Time places and came out with a dub, so I feel like we deserved it."

"Is there anything that you do specific specifically to set yourself up going into a game, especially in a playoff situation?" asked Mathias.

"Not really, honestly," Booker said with a smile. "I really go cool, calm, and collected. Honestly, just going in thinking that we're gonna win the game, that's my mindset always. Having that mindset of we're going to win this game, we have the edge, and just go play basketball."

Of course, the co-hosts waste no time in getting down to the biggest conversations in women's sports. And this time of year, that can only mean one thing: March Madness.

"Some would say this is the most exciting Sunday in women's sports," says O'Hara, kicking off a deep dive in the college basketball's fast-approaching Selection Sunday. "Based on this weekend and season overall, who are your number one seeds? Up for discussion we've got Texas, USC, UConn, UCLA, South Carolina, Notre Dame. What are we saying?"

"I'm a little worried about Notre Dame. Going into the season, I was expecting them to have an elite season," Diaz admits. "But losing to Duke? Bro. They do have a great coach, but Notre Dame on paper should have won that game."

"I think UT is still going to get a number one seed," says Cook. "Throughout the year they've had the number one seed. And even though they lost, I'm going to say South Carolina because they just won. And I'm going to say USC because they're a powerhouse. Then UCLA because their only two losses were to USC."

"I want to say UConn as well, because out of the top teams, they are the underdog of that list. I would love to see them walk away with it," Cook adds. "And like you guys said last week, Paige Bueckers doesn't have a championship yet, right?

As part of our 1-v-1 video series, USC’s India Otto sat down to interview teammate JuJu Watkins. 

Here are five things to know from our conversation with the freshman phenom from LA.

#1 JuJu defines her purpose as wanting to inspire others to not place limits on themselves.

Her advice to younger athletes is to “take a step back and just realize how grateful you are to be around so many great people and be in an environment where you’re able to have an impact on others. And don’t take that for granted any day.” She recommends “just always being in constant awe of how far you’ve come.”

#2 JuJu is self-reflective when it comes to the impact of her growing social media fame.

"People are always going to have something to say, so I think just taking that mindset that you can’t be perfect and everybody’s always going to have an opinion on something.”

#3 An LA native, JuJu says the state of basketball in LA is “just booming right now.”

“The Pac-12 and LA is just amazing, and I’m just glad that I’m able to be a part of that and feel the atmosphere every night.”

#4 JuJu is known for her drip.

Her favorite brands are Rick Owens, Alexander Wang, and Nike. And if she could have dinner with any three people (dead or alive), she would choose Drake, Bob Marley, and Beyonce. 

#5 JuJu’s favorite piece of advice:

“To whom much is given. Much is required.”

As part of our 1-v-1 video series, UCLA’s Camryn Brown sat down to interview her teammate Lauren Betts. 

Here are five things to know from our conversation with the sophomore from Centennial, Colorado.

#1 Betts was the nation’s No. 1 recruit coming out of high school, an experience that taught her the importance of having a good mindset.

“I try to not put too many expectations on myself, I think that adds a lot of pressure. Obviously, I’m surrounded by amazing players and coaches, so I’m just trying to learn from everybody.

#2 Lauren transferred from Stanford to UCLA after her freshman season. When asked about the hardest part of the transfer process she said, “The reactions to when I entered the portal would have to be the hardest. Just trying to not listen to what other people were saying. But it was a huge [decision], so I went to my mom’s house and blocked out the entire world for a few weeks.”

#3 On the best advice she’s been given about life on the big stage: “Staying where my feet are. Just staying present, not comparing myself to anybody in any type of way.”

#4 Lauren shared her perspective on how she’s grown throughout the last year.

“I can do hard things. I’ve built a lot of confidence. I just know when things go low, I can get myself out of that situation, out of that mindset. As long as I’m surrounded by the right people, I can do whatever.”

#5 Lauren is a big Disney fan. If she had to make a starting five out of Disney characters, she would pick Sully from Monster’s Inc., Hercules, Merida from Brave, Lightning McQueen from Cars, and Moana (as point guard of course).

As part of our 1-v-1 video series, UCLA’s Camryn Brown sat down to interview her teammate Gabriela Jaquez.

Here are five things to know from our conversation with the sophomore forward from Camarillo, California.

#1 Playing basketball at UCLA has been Gabriela's lifelong dream. She often reminds herself of that, especially during challenging moments.

“When it gets hard, I just think back to the times where I dreamed of this. If your 12-year-old self could see you doing this, she would be so proud and so happy and wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

#2 Gabriela’s older brother, Jaime Jaquez Jr., played basketball at UCLA and now plays for the Miami Heat in the NBA. She has learned a lot by watching his calm demeanor on the court.

His advice to her? “You have to be so good that your coach can’t take you off the floor.”

#3 The LA native, recognizes the impact of having both UCLA and USC ranked in the top-10 this year. 

“I think it’s really amazing for Southern California basketball, but also women’s basketball as a whole.”

#4  She is known for being the fashionista of the team. If she could swap closets with anyone, she’d pick Hailey Bieber, Sofia Richie, and Kendall Jenner. But she has her eyes on teammate Kiki Rice’s Jordan shoe collection.

 #5 Jaquez has a strict pregame ritual routine going into games.

“I do the same things. I’m always first to sprint in line after we warm up and smile the biggest smile to my coaches.”

Day 2 of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament was punctuated by a series of upsets, throwing brackets into chaos heading into the second round.

No. 9 Kansas State 50, No. 8 Washington State 40

Kansas State defeated Washington State 50-40 on Saturday to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Both teams struggled on offense, with Kansas State shooting 26.4 percent to Washington State’s 25 percent. Ayoka Lee led the Wildcats with 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Brylee Glenn added 14 points and four rebounds.

Kansas State will meet No. 1 NC State in Raleigh on Monday.

No. 11 Villanova 61, No. 6 BYU 57

Villanova upset BYU 61-57 on Saturday thanks to a strong second half. Wildcats leading scorer Maddy Siegrist led the team with 25 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Kaitlyn Orihel added 10 points and four rebounds off the bench.

Villanova will face No. 3 seed Michigan in the second round Monday in Ann Arbor.

No. 11 Princeton 69, No. 6 Kentucky 62

No. 11 seed Princeton stunned No. 6 seed Kentucky 69-62, bouncing the SEC tournament champions in the first round. The Tigers dominated the game from the opening whistle, outshooting the Wildcats 49.1 to 35.7 percent and out-rebounding them 37-30. The win was Princeton’s second in the NCAA Tournament and first since 2015.

Next, Princeton will take on No. 3 Indiana on Monday in Bloomington.
