The Phoenix Mercury have explored trading Skylar Diggins-Smith, The IX reported Wednesday.

Multiple teams have confirmed that the Mercury are shopping Diggins-Smith, according to The IX, but “many are wary of adding her” due to the nature of her departure from Dallas in 2019 and her current situation in Phoenix.

“You can’t let your best player hold you hostage,” a coach reportedly told The IX’s Howard Megdal. “But you’ve got to know the future of the [team].”

Just a few days ago, Diggins-Smith further added fuel to the Phoenix Mercury fire when she tweeted out a clown emoji in response to Vanessa Nygaard’s comments regarding Diana Taurasi’s absence from the All-Star game. The tweet has since been deleted.

“It will not be an All-Star Game because Diana Taurasi is not there,” Nygaard said. Diggins-Smith is playing in the game.

The callout on social media was just the latest in the Mercury saga this season. During a game in May, Taurasi and Diggins-Smith had to be separated by teammates on the bench after tensions rose.

Then, last month, the Mercury star expressed her frustrations to Nygaard during a timeout.

If Diggins-Smith were traded from Phoenix, she wouldn’t be the first star to leave the team this season. Last Saturday, Tina Charles and the Mercury announced a contract divorce after the star center was reportedly unhappy with her role in the Phoenix offense. She has since joined the Seattle Storm.

Diggins-Smith is currently averaging 19.1 points per game, the most on the team, as well as 5.0 assists and 3.8 rebounds. The Mercury have struggled this season and currently sit 11th in the league with a 9-14 record.
