The first episode of SNACKS, a new podcast from Just Women’s Sports featuring Sam Mewis and Lynn Williams, has officially dropped.

While you can listen to the full podcast below, highlights include the beginnings of the duo’s friendship and Mewis discussing the origin of her “tower of power” nickname (~38:00 min mark).

Mewis talks about what it was like growing up “freakishly tall” and being naturally embarrassed due to the fact she stuck out like a sore thumb. She eventually embraced her height, realizing it was a good thing for her career on the pitch.

“I’ve always had this understanding that it was helping me on the field,” Mewis says. “Especially when I was tall and the other girls weren’t. Like, I was tower of power-ing my way down the field even when I was 13, 14.”

“I have always appreciated that and I think that the older I get the more I realize that it’s an asset that I’m lucky that I have.”

Mewis goes on to talk about how an announcer in North Carolina gave her the nickname during a ring ceremony. It was the first time she had ever heard herself referred to as the “tower of power.”

“I started freaking out, because I loved it and thought it was so funny and original and had never heard that before,” Mewis said. “I was like, this guy is a genius.”
