It’s the first time that a team has won three-straight WSL titles and brings the Blues’ total to five. It’s their first under a new ownership group after the sale of Chelsea was announced Friday to a group led by Todd Boehly.
Martha Thomas and Ella Toone each scored for United to put Chelsea down 2-1. But Sam Kerr and the Blues responded after manager Emma Hayes made some key substitutions, with Kerr tallying twice in the second half and Guro Reiten adding one as well.
“I changed the shape [at half-time] and Beth and Sam ran the channels really well,” Hayes told Sky Sports, adding that this is the best win yet for her.
“This is by far and away the best one. 2-1 down first half and then went on to win 4-2. We’re champions because of the second half of the season. We know how to get over the line.”
“The subs really impressed me,” Manchester United’s Kelly Smith told Sky Sports. “Man United were all over Chelsea in the first half and she [Hayes] changed it slightly…Her tactical choices in the second half really made the game.”
With her two goals, Kerr won the Golden Boot with 20 total goals on the season. It’s her second Golden Boot in two full seasons with Chelsea after she won it last year with 21 goals. She took the title over Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema.
