The Kansas City Current has put the NWSL on notice, sneaking into a playoff spot as the postseason push heats up.
Unbeaten through ten games, Kanas City has emerged as one of the NWSL’s most unlikely competitors.
The Current’s emphatic 4-3 win over the North Carolina Courage Saturday highlights the team’s budding attack. Four different players scored during the matchup, including Cece Kizer, who leads the team with five goals and three assists.

Kansas City’s success comes as the club invested in an $18 million training facility in time for the expansion team’s second season. The club’s ownership has consistently shown an eagerness to put money and resources into the team, singing USWNT stars Sam Mewis and Lynn Williams ahead of the 2022 campaign. With both Mewis and Williams sidelined with season-ending injuries, Kansas City’s deep roster has risen to the occasion.
Adrianna Franch has been stellar in goal, anchoring the team’s disciplined backline, while Lo’eau LaBonta spurs the Current’s attack with four goals and a league-leading four assists. Kristen Hamilton has been prolific on the front line as well, notching five goals and one assist.
In his first year with the team, head coach Matt Potter has implemented a disciplined system for the Current. Comfortable without possession, the Current instead knows when to pick its moments and capitalize. Four of Kansas City’s last six games have been multi-goal efforts, with the team’s offense quickly gaining steam.
The Current will look to continue its momentum when the team hosts Angel City at Children’s Mercy Park on Friday.
