Alexandra Eala made an early exit from the 2026 Strasbourg Open on Monday evening, after absorbing a tough 6-3, 5-7, 3-6 opening-round loss to Oleksandra Oliynykova.
The three-set clash lasted nearly three hours before the Ukrainian qualifier completed her comeback victory. This latest defeat thwarts Eala's recent clay-court momentum — just days before she heads to Paris for the 2026 French Open.
Oliynykova Dedicates Win to Ukrainian Solder Father
The opening set began as a deadlocked baseline struggle, with both competitors holding serve through the first six games until Eala finally broke her opponent. But Oliynykova shifted the dynamics of the match in the second set by aggressively attacking Eala's serve.
She quickly stormed to a 4-0 double-break advantage. Although Eala staged a gritty comeback to pull even at 5-5, Oliynykova steadied her errors, securing a definitive break to force a deciding game. In the final set, Eala carved out a 3-2 lead before Oliynykova raised her defensive intensity. She went on to win four consecutive games, converting her 23rd break-point opportunity to seal the win.
It was an emotional victory for Oliynykova, whose father and manager is taking an extended leave from serving in the Ukrainian army to see his daughter play.
"Every day is so important because I don't know when he will see my match the next time," she said post-match.
