Elina Svitolina advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2026 Berlin Open on Tuesday. The Ukrainian moved through after Anna Kalinskaya retired mid-match due to injury.
Elina Svitolina's Path to the Berlin Open Round of 16
Svitolina took control from the opening game. She built a 6-1, 4-1 lead in just 43 minutes on the German grass courts, winning six straight games across both sets. Along the way, she hit four aces and converted five of eight break-point chances.
Kalinskaya held at love early in the first set. But physical issues caught up with her after both players traded breaks in the second, and she was unable to continue.
The result opens a key stretch for Svitolina on grass. She enters the Berlin draw off a strong clay season that included a French Open quarterfinal run. She previously shocked world No. 2 Elena Rybakina to make it to the 2026 Italian Open semifinals earlier this year.
With Wimbledon less than two weeks away, top-ranked WTA players face a quick surface transition. However, Svitolina's early form on grass suggests she's ready for the shift.
She'll next face Germany's Eva Lys on Thursday, live on The Tennis Channel.
