The Chicago Red Stars collected three critical points in the NWSL standings, downing Kansas City 2-1 at home on Saturday night.

An own goal broke the first-half stalemate between an evenly matched Chicago and Kansas City, with Kirsten Edmonds’ deflection finding the back of the net for a Red Stars goal.

Kansas City responded only minutes later, with Hailie Mace nodding a header past Cassie Miller to equalize.

The deciding goal came in the 50th minute, with Makenzy Doniak getting on the end of a buildup play from the Red Stars’ offense to put the game at 2-1.

Saturday’s win puts Chicago within striking distance of a playoff birth at fourth place in the NWSL standings, just a point back from a surging Washington Spirit.
