No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina cruised past No. 12 seed Simona Halep 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday to reach the US Open quarterfinals.

The Ukrainian, who has yet to drop a set in Flushing, has now won nine consecutive matches. Svitolina came into the US Open with momentum after winning a Bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics and a title in Chicago last week.

Winning 71 percent of her made first service points, Svitolina defeated Halep for the first time at a Grand Slam. Halep won their previous two matches at the French Open in 2017 and at Wimbledon in 2019.

Next up: Svitolina will play the winner of No. 16 Angelique Kerber versus 18-year-old Leylah Fernandez.
