Another top Maryland player has entered the transfer portal, with sophomore Angel Reese becoming the fourth player to enter the portal following the conclusion of the season.
The move came mere hours after junior guard Ashley Owusu announced that she had entered the portal.
Reese was the top player for the Terrapins this season, averaging a team-best 17.8 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, the first Maryland player to average a double-double since Angie Scott in 1975. An Associated Press third-team All-American and All-Big Ten first-team selection, she helped lead Maryland to their second-straight Sweet 16.
A Baltimore native, Reese was the No. 2 overall recruit in the Class of 2020 and the highest-ranked recruit in program history.
She joins Owusu, sophomore guard Taisiya Kozlova and graduate student guard Channise Lewis in the portal.
Additionally, graduate students Katie Benzan – who led the team in assists – and Chloe Bibby – the second-leading rebounder – have both declared for the upcoming WNBA draft. In total, the team will have to replace four starters for next season.
In a statement to the Washington Post, coach Brenda Frese said that they wish the athletes “all the best.”
“Every team has been impacted by the transfer portal on both ends of it,” she continued. “Maryland basketball is bigger than any one lineup or person. Our staff is committed to bringing the best student-athletes to Maryland.”
Recent years have seen a plethora of top players depart the Maryland program, with seven recruits ranked in the top 50 by ESPN transferring out of Maryland since 2017.
Guard Taylor Mikesell, the 2019 Big Ten freshman of the year, left for Oregon in 2020 and later Ohio State. That same year, Shakira Austin left for Ole Miss while former five-star center Olivia Owens wound up at Kentucky.
In 2017 another Big Ten freshman of the year, Destiny Slocum, departed the team alongside Kiah Gillespie and Jenna Staiti.
The game was the most-watched regular-season matchup since 2017.
She also has started every game this season for undefeated LSU.
Copper is the team's only returning starter in 2023.
