Ashley Owusu is leaving the Maryland women’s basketball team. The junior guard announced Tuesday that she has entered her name into the transfer portal.

“I have never started anything that I haven’t finished, and finishing was the plan when I decided to come to College Park,” she wrote. “Unfortunately, events that have transpired on and off the court this year have led me to make the very difficult but necessary decision to continue my education and basketball career elsewhere.”

Owusu has been a staple of the Maryland offense for the past three years. In 2020, she was named the Big Ten freshman of the year as well as the Big Ten tournament MVP. She won another tournament MVP award in 2021 whilst also being named an Associated Press third team All-American and winning the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award as the nation’s top shooting guard.

In November, she became the 35th Maryland player to surpass 1,000 career points with a 24-point win over then-No. 6 Baylor.

The junior guard battled an ankle injury this season but finished the season averaging 14.3 points, 3.7 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game.

With the extra year of COVID-19 eligibility still in play, Owusu has two years of eligibility remaining.
