Expansion clubs Angel City FC and San Diego Wave FC have wasted no time introducing themselves to the league, climbing to the top of the NWSL standings with three matches played.

The California clubs improved their records Sunday night, with Angel City notching a 1-0 win over the reigning NWSL champion Washington Spirit and San Diego recording a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Red Stars.

San Diego is anchored by veteran forward Alex Morgan, who currently leads the league with five goals. Morgan added to her tally Sunday, burying her third penalty kick of the regular season to help her side to a commanding win.

Christen Press, the leader of Angel City’s front line, scored her first goal of the season, lifting her side to a shutout over the Spirit. Beating her defender, Press charged into the Spirit box before rifling a shot into the far post in an expertly executed finish.

The San Diego Wave sits in first place with an undefeated 3-0 record, while Angel City is three points back with a 2-1 record to start the season.
