Alyssa Thompson may be a rookie in the NWSL, but she isn’t scoring like one.
In Angel City FC’s 3-2 win Sunday against the Kansas City Current, Thompson showcased just what she can do as she notched the team’s first goal in the 31st minute. After splitting two defenders with a neat bit of ball-handling, Thompson curled a shot past the goalkeeper and off the crossbar for the golazo.

The goal brings her total on the season to three, one behind the league lead. More than that, the play showcased the 18-year-old’s ability to make things happen on the pitch.
“I think we really made it a point today to be on the front foot and to be aggressive,” ACFC defender and captain Ali Riley said. “We knew that if we stood off them, they have a lot of pace up front, they like finding those balls in behind, we would have to be proactive.”
Angel City co-founder Natalie Portman was on hand to see the goal in person. Portman also talked about the club’s new docuseries, which will premier on HBO on May 16.
“It’s been wild to be a part-owner of a professional sports team. I certainly never imagined it in my life. I’m not someone who’s particularly athletic or particularly knowledgeable about sports,” she said.
“But I became passionate about women’s football when I saw the Women’s World Cup and I saw how my son watched the female players just be so extraordinary. I realized what a big cultural impact it could be to value women athletes the same way we do male athletes.”
