Angel City FC will pick first in the 2022 NWSL Expansion Draft and San Diego Wave FC will get the first selection in the NWSL College Draft after a coin flip was used to determine the selection order.
San Diego won the coin flip, which was facilitated by members of the league and representatives from both teams. Wave FC opted to take the No. 1 pick in the first and third rounds of the NWSL College Draft, leaving Angel City with the first pick in the expansion draft on Dec. 16.

Angel City will also have the first selection in the second and fourth rounds of the NWSL Draft.
Both expansion clubs have been making moves ahead of the 2022 drafts. Angel City FC acquired Julie Ertz and Sarah Gorden from the Chicago Red Stars. They will join U.S. women’s national team star Christen Press, who was the club’s first signing in August. San Diego signed Makenzy Doniak, Katie Johnson and Kelsey Turnbow, filling out the club’s roster, which already includes USWNT defender Abby Dahlkemper.
The NWSL Expansion Draft is set for Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. ET, followed by the 2022 NWSL Draft on Dec. 18 at 2 p.m. ET. Both will be streamed on Paramount+.
