Aryna Sabalenka is out at the BNP Paribas Open, saying she tested positive for COVID-19. The world number two was set to take the top seed at the tournament after No. 1 Ash Barty withdrew from Indian Wells to rest.
“Unfortunately I’ve tested positive at Indian Wells and won’t be able to compete,” Sabalenka said via an Instagram story on Saturday. The tennis star said she is “feeling OK” and will remain in isolation until the doctors and health officials clear her.
Indiana Wells would’ve been Sabalenka’s first event since falling to Leylah Fernandez in the semifinals of the US Open in September.
Sabalenka is the latest star to pull out of the BNP Paribas Open, joining Naomi Osaka, who withdrew from the tournament citing her mental health. The competition is scheduled to begin on Monday.
