Breanna Stewart addressed the growing tension around the WNBA's trans athlete debate ahead of the New York Liberty's weekend win over the Indiana Fever.

The two-time league MVP called for all WNBA arenas to remain a "safe space" for fans as rallies protesting trans athletes in women's sports continue to spring up outside games.
"I want Liberty fans and even Indy fans that are going to come here tonight to be able to have this arena be a safe space," Stewart said.
The vet posted 22 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists in the Liberty's 109-102 victory at Brooklyn's Barclays Center on Saturday. But it was the off-court action in New York that made headlines after the game.
Trans Athlete Debate Continues to Make Noise Despite League Efforts
The rallies trace back to Indiana guard Sophie Cunningham's opposition to transgender participation in women's sports, first shared during an ESPN profile last month. Since then, demonstrations have gathered outside Fever games in Seattle and Portland, while a WNBA task force convened on August 12th to address transgender eligibility and growing online harassment.
Still, Stewart emphasized that the debate should not fracture locker rooms. "People are trying to divide us as teams, but also as teammates or as opponents," she added.
No transgender women currently compete in the WNBA. The league's collective bargaining agreement restricts play to women without defining specific gender identity language, leaving the policy question unresolved even as the conversation intensifies around it.
