After 27 weeks and one truly chaotic Decision Day, the 2026 NWSL Playoffs have finally arrived. And this weekend, four high-stakes quarterfinals take the pitch — with results dictating the postseason fates of this year’s eight-team bracket.
Each club enters the NWSL playoff bracket with a different goal in mind. Gotham FC is eyeing history, as the first-time Shield winner and defending league champion hunts the first repeat title since North Carolina went back-to-back in 2019. However, Gotham’s rival Washington is gunning for revenge after narrowly missing the 2025 trophy. And it would be that much sweeter if the Spirit trumped Juan Carlos Amorós’s side on home turf, with DC’s Audi Field tapped to host this year’s NWSL Final.
Meanwhile, stiff competition lurks around every bracket corner. Seattle is striving to give retiring legend Jess Fishlock one last shot at glory, while Angel City looks to become the tournament’s dark horse. San Diego, Kansas City, Portland, and Utah are also in the mix, leaning on standout talent and a shared determination to shake up the postseason order.
To make sense of the mayhem, JWS’s official 2026 NWSL Playoffs power rankings tap into regular-season results, title odds, and bracket stats to predict which teams will go the distance — and which teams are going home.

1. San Diego Wave (18-8-4, No. 2 Seed)
Current title odds: +300
Few NWSL teams enter the playoff bracket on a better run than San Diego. The Wave is riding a seven-game unbeaten streak, tallying four wins and a draw over its last five matches. Trinity Byars leads the attack with 11 goals, pairing speed with sharp finishing, while Kenza Dali runs Jonas Eidevall’s possession-heavy midfield while leading the NWSL in chances created last month. Then there’s Melanie Barcenas, fresh off setting a single-season scoring record for a teenager with seven goals this year.
A home quarterfinal — plus a potential home semifinal — gives the Wave the clearest road to the championship. And the +300 title odds don't hurt either.

2. Gotham FC (18-5-7, No. 1 Seed)
Current title odds: +270
Instead of resting on its 2025 laurels, Gotham spent the year building. Veterans Sam Kerr and Denise O’Sullivan arrived this summer, offsetting all-time leading scorer Esther González’s abrupt July exit. Along the way, the club won its first Challenge Cup and beat Washington before a record crowd at Citi Field.
Those 18 wins might have secured Gotham the 2026 Shield, but mounting injuries to Jordynn Dudley, Bruninha, Emily Sonnett, and Jaelin Howell have thinned the Bats’ roster. Gotham will have to rely on its depth, utilizing core players like Rose Lavelle, Jaedyn Shaw, Midge Purce, and Guro Reiten to live up to its odds-on favorite prediction.

3. Washington Spirit (17-9-4, No. 3 Seed)
Current title odds: +350
Washington’s last two seasons both ended on the championship stage — which could be a good or bad omen depending on how you look at it. The Spirit fell to Orlando in 2024 before losing to Gotham in 2025 — both tight contests that prove owner Michele Kang’s master plan is working.
The Spirit posted three wins in its final five NWSL matches, with Lucia Di Guglielmo’s 70th-minute tally upsetting Gotham 1-0 before star re-signing Trinity Rodman netted her 12th goal of the year in a win over Chicago. Hal Hershfelt’s season-ending ACL tear impacts the midfield, but if Rodman, Leicy Santos, and Andi Sullivan can fill the gaps, the Spirit could make another deep push into the playoffs. Washington’s +350 title odds likely reflect Sunday’s marquee quarterfinal matchup: a tough test against Sophia Wilson and the Portland Thorns. But there’s reason to hope this squad can get over the hump.

4. Kansas City Current (16-9-5, No. 4 Seed)
Current title odds: +400
Kansas City saved its best for last, outscoring opponents 15-3 during a five-match winning streak to cap a tumultuous season for the Current. Back-to-back MVP Temwa Chawinga and breakout star Haley Hopkins fueled the run with 12 goals each, while NWSL vet Lo’eau LaBonta anchors the midfield alongside 2026 addition Croix Bethune with her record-setting 11 assists.
Luckily, the Current are even better at home, racking up 32 straight unbeaten matches at CPKC Stadium. That edge will matter on Saturday, when surging Angel City visits on a late-season streak of its own. And at +400, KC will need all the 12th-man energy the Blue Crew can muster to detrail LA’s Cinderella story.

5. Angel City FC (15-8-7, No. 5 Seed)
Current title odds: +1100
Angel City is no stranger to the underdog life, but this year’s bounce-back might be the 2026 NWSL season’s best storyline. ACFC sat in 11th place before firing head coach Alexander Straus in June. Interim boss Leif Gunnar Smerud subsequently stepped in, sending the team on an unexpected 10-match unbeaten course that drove Angel City all the way to the NWSL Playoffs.
Along the way, Sveindís Jónsdóttir and fullback Evelyn Shores set club records with 10 goals and eight assists apiece, while rookie Taylor Suarez added a spark with two key Decision Day assists. At the other end of the field, keeper Angelina Anderson’s club-record 10 shutouts back up Angel City’s league-best +22 goal differential. Expect LA to put up a fight against the Current despite its unfavorable title odds.

6. Portland Thorns (14-8-8, No. 6 Seed)
Current title odds: +1600
The Thorns’ season has come in waves. Armed with returning superstar Sophia Wilson, Portland took six of its first eight games under new hire Robert Vilahamn — before posting just three wins in the last two months. Olivia Moultrie’s August ACL tear didn’t help, and neither did Wilson’s two-match suspension in October.
Wilson is now back in good standing, and the 2022 MVP scored twice on Decision Day to reach a career-high 15 goals on the season. Pietra Tordin adds another threat to the Thorns’ attack, with eight goals and nine assists. Still, Portland allowed the most goals of any playoff team in the bracket, leading to its +1600 title odds. Add in some unfavorable history — quarterfinal opponent Washington ended the Thorns’ 2025 season — and Portland faces a steep early climb.

7. Seattle Reign (14-11-5, No. 8 Seed)
Current title odds: +1400
Seattle might have made the playoffs, but it certainly did it the hard way, scoring just 11 goals through its first 12 matches. Luckily for Laura Harvey’s side, midfielder Maddie Mercado lit up midseason, slotting in 10 goals to threaten Reign icon Megan Rapinoe’s 2017 record.
USWNT goalie Claudia Dickey’s nine clean sheets anchor the team’s penchant for winning ugly games. Then there’s Jess Fishlock, the franchise’s last-remaining original player, set to retire at the end of 2026 after passing Rapinoe as the Reign’s all-time regular-season leading scorer. A first title would send the Welsh titan off in unmatched style, but in true Seattle fashion, it’ll have to get past top dog Gotham first.

8. Utah Royals (14-11-5, No. 7 Seed)
Current title odds: +2500
Utah’s first-ever playoff berth caps an impressive turnaround for a club that finished the past two seasons near the bottom of the NWSL standings. Thriving under manager Jimmy Coenraets, the Royals have found their defensive identity behind ironwoman Kate Del Fava, who hasn’t missed a minute since 2024.
While Canada stalwart Cloé Lacasse drives the counterattack with eight goals and 10 assists, the offense appears to have lost its mojo in recent weeks. Top scorer Mina Tanaka sat out three games with a hamstring injury, and Utah hasn’t found the back of the net since October 3rd. With Tanaka’s playoff status unclear and quarterfinal foe San Diego holding a 6-0 head-to-head edge, the +2500 Royals are this year’s longest title shot.
