Sorana Cîrstea's 20-year career might have reached its final chapter at the 2026 Hong Kong Open on Thursday. The 36-year-old Romanian and tournament's top seed dropped a 2-6, 3-6 quarterfinal decision to qualifier Alexandra Shubladze.
Will Sorana Cîrstea Retire after 2026 Hong Kong Open Loss?
This past December, Cîrstea announced that 2026 would be her last full season after two decades on the pro tennis circuit.
"For me, it's very important to know when to stop and to do it on my own terms," Cîrstea said, teasing a new philosophy on the court. "I'll keep going as long as I'm happy."
And she's had plenty of reasons to be happy during this year's WTA season. She reached a career-high ranking of No. 17 this past July, beating top opponents like Emma Raducanu and Aryna Sabalenka. Those wins proved she could still compete at the top of the game even as her retirement clock ticked down.
But this latest loss in Hong Kong might've put a stop to that momentum for good.
Shubladze, a 21-year-old Russian who entered the draw as a qualifier, controlled both sets against Cîrstea from the baseline. She opened the first frame by winning four straight games, and followed by saving five break points. Her grit and power eventually punched her ticket to her first semifinal on the WTA Tour.
For Cîrstea, who turned pro in 2006 and collected four singles titles across her career, a bigger question now looms. With the end of the tour in sight, will she try to keep winning or call it quits?
