FC Bayern clawed back from a two-goal deficit to salvage a 2-2 draw against Real Madrid in a back-and-forth UWCL battle on Wednesday. The result stretches Bayern's unbeaten UEFA Women's Champions League streak to three league-phase games, as the German titan climbs the UWCL standings on five points.
Real Madrid Strike Early Before Bayern Launch Comeback
But it was Real who looked dangerous early on, striking twice inside the opening 22 minutes. Athenea del Castillo finished off Linda Caicedo's low cross in the seventh minute. Then, Lineth Beerensteyn, who left Bayern for Real Madrid last summer, nodded home Arianna Caruso’s free kick to double the lead.
FC Bayern pulled one back before halftime, though, when Edna Imade met a Klara Bühl corner with a firm header in the 31st minute.
The Reds completed the comeback early in the second half. After goalkeeper Merle Frohms parried Linda Dallmann's strike, Momoko Tanikawa latched onto the spill and bent a left-footed finish inside the far post.
Bayern then pinned Real back, racking up 64% possession and 16 shots to Real's seven, but couldn't find a winner. Magdalena Eriksson's header from a corner sailed over the crossbar late, and sub Sophie Proost rattled the woodwork in stoppage time.
In the UEFA Women's Champions League standings, the draw keeps Bayern vs Real Madrid tight heading into the back half of the league phase.
