The ballot was held Wednesday, with Brisbane receiving 72 yes votes and five no votes from a total of 77 valid votes.
Brisbane, who began the effort to host the Olympics six years ago, was the only option still in the running to be a host city.
Back in February, the Associated Press reported that the IOC named Brisbane its preferred candidate, essentially deterring other possible hosts – Qatar, Hungary and Germany – from putting up a bid.
The most recent Olympic Games to be held in Australia were the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
