Brittney Griner’s block sends Phoenix Mercury to WNBA Finals

The Phoenix Mercury are headed to the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2014 after downing the Las Vegas Aces 87-84 in Game 5 of the semifinals.

The game Friday night came down to the final possession, with Brittney Griner coming up clutch for the Mercury in the waning seconds. The Aces, down by two points with 4.8 seconds left on the clock, had one final opportunity for an inbounds play.

Las Vegas found A’ja Wilson for the game-deciding play only for the former MVP to be denied by Griner at the rim. With under a second remaining on the clock, Griner’s block sealed the Aces’ fate and secured Phoenix a spot in the Finals.

Griner’s defensive stop capped a stellar performance from the Mercury center, who had a team-high 28 points to go along with nine rebounds.

Next up: Phoenix will take on the Chicago Sky in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET on ABC.
