Another Cameron Brink injury clouded Thursday night's Sparks vs Liberty matchup. The LA center needed help off the floor after taking a hard hit to the ribs from Breanna Stewart. The injury came just as the Sparks were ripping off a 21-0 run in the fourth quarter. Despite the surge, New York squeezed out a 85-81 win.
What Led to Cameron Brink's Fourth-Quarter Injury Against the Liberty?
The contact came near the six-minute mark of the final quarter, with Brink guarding Stewart at the elbow. Stewart lowered her shoulder into Brink's midsection, drawing an offensive foul. Brink crumpled to her knees, clutched her ribs, and stayed down before rising with help from LA's coaching staff. She didn't return to the court.
Before the exit, Brink turned in an efficient performance with 9 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 assists, and 1 steal in 19 minutes. Sparks coach Lynne Roberts kept her updates on Brink's condition brief after the game.
LA Sparks Coach Gives Postgame Update
"Cam's getting evaluated right now. She took a brutal hit to the ribs," Roberts said in the Sparks' postgame press conference. "The docs are looking at her right now. That's all I know right now."
But by Friday morning, the mood eased slightly. AP reporter Doug Feinberg shared a post saying he spotted Brink outside the team bus playing with some young fans, suggesting the rib issue may not be serious.
Brink's WNBA career has, so far, been defined by health hurdles. Her 2024 rookie season ended after just 15 games with a torn ACL and she recently battled a sprained ankle which kept her out for nearly a month during the summer season.
A definite status update will likely come before the Sparks take on the Washington Mystics on Saturday at 7:30 PM ET on WNBA League Pass.
