Up next for Gauff is No. 12 Belinda Bencic, who dispatched No. 20 Alexandra Eala 6-4, 6-0 in 73 minutes. Before turning to that matchup, though, Gauff reflected on her mindset against Korneeva.
"My main focus today was let me try and close it out," Gauff said. "Probably not the way I should be thinking but it worked today."
Elena Rybakina Rallies Past Samsonova
The top half of the draw offered more drama. World No. 2 Elena Rybakina nearly bowed out, trailing Liudmila Samsonova 0-3 with two breaks down in the deciding set before rallying to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win.
That escape sets up a quarterfinal against Naomi Osaka. The four-time Grand Slam champion, ranked No. 13, ousted Canadian Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-4, breaking in the seventh game of each set. Bencic, meanwhile, extended her winning streak over left-handed opponents to 10 matches.
