Chicago Red Stars’ midfielder Danielle Colaprico is proud of the fight the Red Stars showed throughout the season, taking to social media to pen a heartfelt note upon conclusion of the season.

“This year has not been easy both on and off the field,” she wrote. “But I am so proud of each and everyone of my teammates for continuing to show up and step up when called upon. Definitely not the result we wanted but we as a team have grown so much.”

“This year was like no other and for as much of it that was tough, and sad, and draining, I loved every second of it. Because I have the best teammates in the world and honestly don’t know where I would be without them today.”

The Red Stars lost their third championship final in as many years on Saturday to the Washington Spirit, who claimed the NWSL Championship. The Red Stars previously fell in the 2019 NWSL Championship and the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup final.

Colaprico, who spent a good part of the season injured, replaced Mallory Pugh at the half on Saturday after an injury forced Pugh to retire.

In the post, Colaprico said that despite soccer often being a light, this season that light “was not always there.”

“But guess what, my teammates/coaches were,” she continued. “And they continue to show me the importance of the relationships we build in this sport. Yes, we are soccer players, but we are human first. And humans need one another to survive this crazy world.”

The offseason has already gotten off to an interesting start for the Red Stars after head coach Rory Dames resigned from the club on Sunday.
