Coco Gauff, who was forced to pull out of the Tokyo Olympics after contracting COVID-19, has lost her sense of smell.
Gauff, 17, was scheduled to get her first dose of the vaccine the same week she tested positive for COVID-19.
She said her age and the nature of the professional tennis tour have made it tough for her to get vaccinated.
“The real problem is just getting the dosages spaced out and, obviously, going from country to country is difficult,” Gauff said.
“But,” she continued, “I’m going to get it as soon as I can.”
Gauff is planning to get her first shot after the Cincinnati tournament that runs the week of Aug. 16 and her second shot after the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 30 in New York.
She is set to face Jessica Pegula on Saturday in an exhibition match at the Citi Open hard-court tournament.
