Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi has been fined $2,500 after pushing an official in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals on Wednesday. The league announced Taurasi’s fine for inappropriate contact with a game official on Thursday.
The incident in question occurred in the second quarter of the Mercury’s Game 2 win, with Sophie Cunningham going after a rebound on her missed shot. Cunningham then grabbed the ball, falling to the ground. The Sky’s Kahleah Copper jumped in to tie up the ball, but got her arms wrapped around Cunningham’s neck. The tangle ended with both players exchanging words and getting into each other’s faces.
Official Tiara Cruse came in to hold Copper back, as did Sky teammate Courtney Vandersloot. Diana Taurasi also ran up, shoving Cruse to get to her teammate Cunningham.

Game officials reviewed the play, and a common foul was called on Copper. At the time, Taurasi was not called for her contact with Cruse.
WNBA rules indicate that a player or coach who makes intentional contact with a game official will receive an automatic one-game suspension without pay. Instead, Taurasi was fined $2,500, sparking conversation online about the lack of a technical call during the game.
The Phoenix Mercury and Chicago Sky will take the court again in Friday’s Game 3, airing at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
