The Metropolitan Riveters have tabbed Digit Murphy as their team’s President for the upcoming season, according to a report from The Ice Garden.
Murphy is currently the president and director of player personnel for the Toronto Six. She also served as the team’s coach during its inaugural season in 2020-21.
Murphy, who played college hockey at Cornell, coached the Brown University women’s hockey program for 21 years, becoming the first female head coach to 200 wins in 2007. She also became the winningest coach in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey history, finishing her NCAA coaching career with 318 wins.
She also spent time coaching in the now-defunct Canadian Women’s Hockey League.
Murphy faced criticism for her association with the Women’s Sports Policy Working Group, which has come under fire for its views on transgender athletes. Murphy cut ties with the group after those views came to light in May 2021.
“Me, my team, my staff, we had to do a deep dive of what it really means to be inclusive,” Murphy said at the time. “We did some training, we did some stuff with Athlete Ally, and you know, it really opened my eyes about sport and trans people, and how sport plays a role and what a huge problem it is from the standpoint of like kids not being allowed to play sports, and not being able to get health care.
“Discussing the whole issue and how we’re handling it as a society opened my eyes.”
The Premier Hockey Federation, previously known as the National Women’s Hockey League, underwent a branding change ahead of the 2021-22 season in an effort to be more inclusive. The league said that the change aligns with the league’s aim to have a league “based on the skill and talent of its athletes as opposed to their gender.”
The Riveters finished the 2021-22 season with a record of 7-12-1, finishing fourth in the standings. The Six came in second in the regular season standings with a record of 16-3-1.
