Elena Rybakina withdrew from her 2026 Pan Pacific Open quarterfinal against Leylah Fernandez on Friday citing a lingering neck injury. The world No. 1 addressed the WTA tournament's fans in Tokyo ahead of the scheduled match, revealing she'd been managing the issue for several days.
"I hope to see you all next year," she told the crowd.

In a longer statement released on the WTA website, Rybakina expanded on the knock that sidelined her in Japan.
"Unfortunately, I’ve been experiencing inflammation and pain in my neck, which has been affecting my ability to play at my best," she wrote. "It’s a very difficult decision, as I love playing here and always appreciate the incredible support from the fans."
While the setback stings, it doesn't dim the breakout season Rybakina's enjoyed so far. She's taken home titles at the Australian and US Open, leap-frogging Aryna Sabalenka in the WTA standings in the process.
She locked up a year-end No. 1 ranking by beating Yulia Putintseva in Tokyo just one day earlier, making her decision Friday feel more strategic than concerning.
Her focus now turns to next month's WTA Finals at Indian Wells. She noted the need to protect her body before the season's biggest remaining stage, where full fitness will matter most.
