First lady Jill Biden is set to attend the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympic Games, the White House announced Tuesday.
The announcement comes as the city has entered a new state of emergency due to a rise in COVID-19 cases. Just last week, the IOC announced the Games would be held without fans.
Biden last attended the Olympic Games in 2010, when she and husband Joe Biden — then the vice president — led the U.S. delegation to the Winter Games in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The last time the U.S. was represented at the Olympic Games by a first lady was Michelle Obama at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.
