NJ/NY Gotham FC General Manager Yael Averbuch West addressed supporters after the team logged its eighth-straight loss against the North Carolina Courage Sunday.
The club conceded an own goal to hand North Carolina a 1-0 win, a discouraging development in an already challenging season.
“I assure you all, we are NOT ok with being at the bottom of the table,” Averbuch West responded to a Tweet from The Athletic’s Meg Linehan. “To Meg’s point, this position is all too common for this club.”

Gotham FC has endured a trying 2022 campaign, culminating with the firing of coach head coach Scott Parkinson in August due to poor performance. The club has also withstood a series of personnel changes, with Allie Long away on maternity leave, Ashlyn Harris and Imani Dorsey battling injury at various points and 2021 NWSL Defender of the Year Caprice Dydasco traded to the Houston Dash.
“There’s ups and downs always in the season, and all we can do is just weather the storms and stick together and do the best we can and just trust in our coaching staff to lead us in the right direction,” Dorsey told Just Women’s Sports in July. “That’s all we can do at the end of the day.”
Averbuch West is imploring Gotham FC supporters to stay the course as well, outlining the club’s plan for success moving forward.
“We are working, alongside ownership, on our on-field club identity, just as the club re-branded off the field about a year and a half ago. As we work to identify our next Head Coach and look at our roster for 2023, we recognize the need for an identity that goes beyond who is currently here,” Averbuch West said.
The NJ/NY team’s disappointing 4-13-0 run comes after the club acquired stars like Harris, Ali Krieger and Kriste Mewis in the 2022 offseason, leading many to believe Gotham FC was in a win-now mode.
With only five games left in the regular season and virtually no chance at a playoff appearance, Averbuch West’s eye is now on next year.
“We feel very hopeful as we create this blueprint and we are grateful for those of you who have stuck with us to support up until this point,” she said. “We urge you all to see this time as the beginning of a journey!”
