Gretchen Walsh is making a splash, as the US swimmer broke the 50-meter freestyle world record with a 23.55 finish at this week’s Sette Colli Trophy swimming competition.
Walsh’s record-breaking swim comes just 10 days after current training partner and former UVA teammate Kate Douglass set the previous mark.
That makes University of Virginia responsible for producing the two fastest 50-meter freestylers in women’s swimming history.
“I’m here,” she said afterward. “I’m going to try to keep breaking world records in everything.”
Walsh already owns the world record in the 100-meter butterfly and holds the 16 fastest times ever recorded in the event.
She tallied four total Olympic medals in 2024, and continues to dominate post-collegiate swimming competition.
