Kristie Mewis describes ‘crazy’ Olympics with Sam Kerr

Kristie Mewis had a whirlwind Olympics. Not only did she share the experience with sister and U.S. teammate Sam Mewis, but she also got to play against her girlfriend, Australian soccer star Sam Kerr.

The USWNT played Australia twice during the Summer Games, the first time to a 0-0 draw in the group stage. In their second meeting, the U.S. clinched the bronze medal with a thrilling 4-3 win over the Matildas.

“I hadn’t seen her in so long, so of course it was like crazy that we were going to be at the Olympics together and crazy that we were going to be playing each other,” Kristie Mewis says of Kerr on the latest episode of the Snacks podcast.

COVID-19 protocols, however, dampened their Tokyo reunion.

“It was obviously  so cool that she was there and that we were playing them, but also obviously with COVID times and stuff like that … I couldn’t really see her that much. And it had been so long already — it had been months,” Mewis says.

The two did find time to catch up between games. Mewis recalls sharing a coffee with Kerr since their team meal rooms were next to each other in the hotel.

Having both her sister and Kerr in her life on and off the pitch, while rewarding, has caused some confusion for Mewis.

“It’s actually, like, harder than I thought it was going to be,” she says, adding that their middle names are even similar: Kerr’s is May and Sam Mewis’ is June.

“When she told me her middle name,” Mewis says, “I was like, ‘You’re joking, right?'”
