First game? First win.
That’s what Gotham FC can now say after beating the Orlando Pride 1-0 last night.
But it wasn’t just their first win on their first game of the season. It was also their first game as Gotham FC, making it also their first win with their new name.
Prior to the start of the 2021 season, it was announced that they would be rebranding as Gotham FC after going as Sky Blue FC since the 2008 season
With a lot of back and forth early on, Gotham was awarded a penalty kick in the 12th minute after a handball in the box but Nahomi Kawasumi was denied by Ashlyn Harris to keep it locked at zero.
Eventually it was Paige Monaghan that would score the lone goal of the game in the 79th minute off of a right-wing cross sent by Ifeoma Onumonu.

“We expected Orlando to be pretty direct with their approach within the game and we knew they had key personnel and how they were looking to catch us behind our back line.” Gotham FC head coach Freya Coombe said after the game. “I was really pleased with our ability of our center backs, Gina Lewandoski and Mandy Freeman, to be able to deal with it, combining with DiDi to be able to continue to build so I was really pleased with that element.”
With the win Gotham FC advances to 1-0-0 while the Orlando Pride fall to 0-1-1.
Gotham is back in action Tuesday, April 20th at home against the North Carolina Courage (1-0-0).
