Wednesday's WNBA rematch looked out of reach for Washington in the third quarter. Dallas led by as many as 20 points in the second half and appeared in full control of the Wings vs Mystics battle. However, the young home side answered back.
Shakira Austin Dominates Paint in Wings vs Mystics Rematch
The Mystics stormed back for a 96-92 win at CareFirst Arena with Shakira Austin powering the rally. The trusted center finished the game with 27 points and 13 rebounds, delivering a dominant performance that inspired Washington late in the matchup.
Austin's night built on her 28-point showing against Dallas just five days earlier. On Wednesday, she scored 14 points in the third quarter alone to keep Washington within striking distance. And Ole Miss product Cotie McMahon took advantage, supplying a season-high 18 points off the bench — including 10 in the fourth.
McMahon knotted the score at the free-throw line to cap the Washington comeback. Alanna Smith briefly put Dallas back in front. But McMahon answered with a 3-point play, giving Washington its first lead at 89-88.
Sophomore standout Sonia Citron subsequently buried consecutive shots in the paint to stretch the margin to five inside the minute mark. McMahon sealed it with a short jumper and a 95-90 edge with just 11.4 seconds remaining.
By the end of the night, Washington had outscored Dallas 52-33 after halftime and improved to 17-12. Citron and Georgia Amoore each chipped in 12 points to bring Washington over the finish line.
It marked the Mystics' fifth straight win and their first 20-point comeback since 2017.
