No. 21 Iowa fell to No. 23 Ohio State 92-88 on Monday, despite a 43-point performance from star sophomore Caitlin Clark.
It was a back-and-forth affair between the two teams, with the lead changing 16 times and the game being tied five times. Iowa had 44 points in the paint to the Buckeyes’ 40. But three turnovers in the final four minutes from Clark ultimately sunk the Hawkeyes as the Buckeyes capitalized on all of them.
Also contributing to the loss was an uncharacteristic 10-of-15 on free throws.
“Ohio State is a great team,” said Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder. “I mean it’s just incredibly frustrating right now because I feel like my team played their hearts out. They left everything on the floor. I think they worked hard against a very good basketball team.”
The Buckeye victory ends Iowa’s seven-game win streak. Iowa remains in third place in the Big ten standings with an 8-2 record while Ohio State sits fourth with a league record of 8-3.
Clark had 43 points, seven assists and four rebounds in the loss, including a critical three in the fourth quarter that came from well beyond the arc.

With her performance, Clark finishes the month of January averaging 30.4 points, 7.7 rebounds and 9.1 assists per game. According to STATs, no NBA player has matched or exceeded those averages in the month of January since Michael Jordan in 1989. Jordan averaged 33.7 points, 8.4 rebounds and 9.1 assists per game.
Adding to her history-making season, Clark is also the first Big Ten women’s basketball player with more than 300 points in a month over the last 20 seasons.
Teammate Monika Czinano had 23 points and nine rebounds, marking her 11th 20-point game on the season.
Taylor Mikesell led the Buckeyes with 24 points and five rebounds. It was the 19th time this season that she scored in double figures. Jacy Sheldon and Rebeka Mikulasikova added 20 points and 17 points respectively.
The Hawkeyes will go on the road at Wisconsin on Thursday before taking on No. 6 Michigan on Sunday.
