The second round of the 2021 Division I women’s soccer championship concluded on Saturday after two full days of competition.
The weekend was filled with upsets, penalty shootouts and all-around tournament chaos.
Highlights:
- Washington is heading to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history after narrowly defeating No. 15 Saint Louis on penalty kicks Friday. Goalkeeper Olivia Sekany made a diving save on a Saint Louis penalty kick before scoring one of her own to send the Huskies on to the next round.
- UCLA scarcely avoided a second-round upset to Iowa. Down 1-0 for most of the game, it looked like No. 3 UCLA was going to be knocked out of the tournament early. Then, in the final five minutes of the game, freshman Reilyn Turner scored two goals to secure a Bruins win.
LEGENDARY. That pass by @JaceyPederson followed by the game-winner by @reilynturner! What a comeback by UCLA!#GoBruins
