Alex Morgan is undeniable.
The veteran forward is in the best form of her career, running away with the NWSL Golden Boot race by logging a staggering 11 goals in ten matches.
Two of those goals came in Sunday’s game against Gotham FC, with Morgan adding an assist to her tally for good measure, earning her JWS NWSL Player of the Week honors.
In both of her finishes, Morgan showed her unique ability to pull off the shoulder of the center back, sneaking in behind the backline for a pair of cheeky finishes.

Morgan’s clinical ability in the final third propels the 32-year-old atop the league in goals per 90 minutes with 1.22. She also leads the NWSL in goals and assists with 12, two ahead of USWNT teammate Sophia Smith of the Portland Thorns.
Vlatko Andonovski, head coach of the USWNT, has taken notice of Morgan’s hot streak, naming her to his CONCACAF W Championship roster. The June camp marks Morgan’s first national team call-up since October, joining a forward roster that includes Smith, who has eight goals on the NWSL season, and Mallory Pugh, who boasts six for the Chicago Red Stars.
For Morgan, joining San Diego in the club’s inaugural NWSL season has invigorated her game with a new energy, kickstarting her renaissance.
“Everything has just really come together in my career,” Morgan said on the Attacking Third podcast in April, crediting her happiness off the pitch to her performance on the field. “I go to training, and we have a team that has really created a great culture in the locker room.”
Morgan’s Sunday performance lifts the Wave atop the NWSL standings ahead of the international break, a loud statement for the expansion club to make.
“Getting back to the top of the table is super important for us going into this international break and doing it definitively, three goals, no goals against. So just a great performance from this team,” Morgan told CBS after the match, adding that she was happy to see the squad capitalized on critical chances.
Honorable mention: Fellow USWNT veteran Becky Sauerbrunn got in on the goalscoring as well, notching her first NWSL goal since 2019 in Portland’s 6-0 victory Sunday. The star defender’s rare finish up the pitch earns her an NWSL Player of the Week honorable mention.
