NWSL players will have a say in next commissioner

NWSL players are going to have a say in the naming of the next commissioner, according to the NWSL Players Association.

In a statement issued late Monday, the NWSLPA wrote that the NWSL and the PA have “made further progress towards reaching a resolution over the Player’s Association’s demands issued on October 6, 2021.”

The NWSLPA’s demands came following a league-wide reckoning after The Athletic published allegations of abuse against then-North Carolina Courage head coach Paul Riley.

Much of the discussion has since been centered on how the league will move forward, something that the NWSLPA recognized on Monday.

“These protections are necessary to move the League forward, and more time is needed to hash out important details.”

They then added that per the NWSL’s announcement, representatives of the Players Association will meet with candidates for the commissioner job “to ensure the players’ voices are heard and they play a meaningful role in the selection of the next commissioner.”

The extension on the demands will be seven days and has been made in “good faith.” The final resolution of the players’ demands is expected by the close of business on Monday, October 25th.
