Portland Thorns defender Becky Sauerbrunn underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in her right knee, the Thorns announced Wednesday. Sauerbrunn is expected to be back in time for the NWSL regular season, which begins in six weeks.

Sauerbrunn re-signed with the Thorns in February on a one-year contract. She joined the club in a trade from Utah Royals FC ahead of the 2020 NWSL season.

The USWNT captain has appeared in 26 matches for the Thorns, helping them to the 2020 NWSL Community Shield, the 2021 Challenge Cup and the 2021 Women’s International Champions Cup. In 2021, she also won her first career NWSL Shield with Portland.

A four-time NWSL Defender of the Year, Sauerbrunn has also been named to the NWSL Best IX seven times. Having been part of the NWSL since its founding, the 2022 season will mark her 10th in the NWSL after beginning her career with FC Kansas City in 2013.

Sauerbrunn is also a staple of the USWNT, having made 202 appearances with the team.
