The 2022 NWSL championship match will be held at Audi Field in Washington the weekend of Oct. 28, The Athletic reported Wednesday.
The news comes after the USWNT announced Wednesday that one of its two friendlies against Nigeria in September will take place at the D.C. soccer field.
The stadium, which opened in 2018, also was announced as the host of the 2023 MLS All-Star game next July.
The Spirit are scheduled to play six regular-season matches at Audi Field this year. The team normally splits its home matches between the 18,000-seat venue and 5,000-seat Segra Field in Leesburg, Virginia. The Spirit would like to play their entire home schedule at Audi in the coming years.
The defending NWSL champions, the Spirit sit near the bottom of the league table in 11th place, one spot ahead of North Carolina, with just nine points through 12 games. Their only win of the regular season came on May 1 in their season opener.
The down season so far represents a stark contrast to the team’s play in the latter half of 2021, and even in this year’s Challenge Cup. Both Washington and North Carolina played for the preseason tournament title, with the Courage coming out on top.
