A group of Washington Spirit investors led by former Senate majority leader Tom Daschle are urging Steve Baldwin to sell the team to Y. Michele Kang, threatening legal action if he does not do so, according to the Washington Post.
Earlier this month, Baldwin reportedly entered into exclusive negotiations with a group led by Todd Boehly and Jennifer Mackesy. Their offer of $25 million is 40 percent less than Kang’s $35 million proposal.
At the time of her offer, Kang wrote that she was willing to close on a sale before Jan. 1. Earlier this year, Baldwin said he would sell the team before the new year.
In a letter sent to Baldwin that was obtained by The Washington Post, 17 of the Spirit’s investors wrote, “It is our collective position that the $35 million big is so far superior there is but one option worth pursuing.” If Baldwin were to sell to Boehly, the investors wrote in the letter that they “reserve all of their rights and remedies under the governing documentation and applicable state and federal law. Please consider this a collective notice and reservation of rights.”
According to the report, however, Baldwin is adamant that he will not sell the team to Kang “under any circumstances.”
The two have fought for control of the team for months. In October, Spirit players demanded Baldwin sell the team to Kang in a joint letter. In it, they wrote that “the person we trust is Michele. She continuously puts players’ needs and interests first.”
Despite a multitude off-field issues in 2021, the Spirit won their first NWSL championship last month.
