Call it an unofficial world championship, if you will.
According to Steven Goff of the Washington Post, Olympique Lyonnais and FC Barcelona will be hosted by the Portland Thorns this summer in a tournament that will also feature the Houston Dash.
The Women’s International Champions Cup will take place August 18-21 in Portland, Ore., four months into the NWSL season while European teams will be in preseason. Players will also be coming off of the Tokyo Olympics, with the gold medal game slated to take place on August 6th.
It’s a matchup of champions, as all four participants are currently titleholders. Houston won the NWSL Challenge Cup last summer and Portland finished first in the league’s fall series.
Meanwhile, across the pond, Olympique Lyonnais is looking to win its 15th consecutive French first-division title and sixth straight UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy.
Barcelona currently leads in Spain and was a 2019 Champions League finalist. It’s likely that they’ll meet Lyonnais in the semifinals later this month.
The Women’s ICC will happen the same days as was planned for the four-team women’s tournament in Louisville. The tournament includes newcomers Racing Louisville FC, the Chicago Red Stars, and two European teams yet to be named.
