Sam Mewis is expected to return to North Carolina.
As first reported by Dan Lauletta and John Halloran on Tuesday, the Manchester City midfielder will re-join the North Carolina Courage prior to the Tokyo Olympics this summer.

Mewis’ return would give the Courage a big boost heading into the NWSL regular season. North Carolina just missed out on the Challenge Cup final following a scoreless draw with Orlando on Saturday. Mewis adds scoring depth alongside fellow midfielders Debinha, who led the NWSL in scoring during the Challenge Cup with three goals, Kristen Hamilton, and Jessica McDonald.
Prior to signing with Manchester City on a one-year contract, Mewis played three seasons with the Courage, winning two NWSL championships, making three championship appearances and scoring 13 goals in that span.
She also made an immediate impact for City, netting 13 goals in 27 appearances during the 2020-21 season.
Mewis was named the 2020 U.S. Women’s Soccer Player of the Year after performing at a high level for Manchester City, the Courage in the 2020 Challenge Cup and the USWNT.
Back in March, ESPN named the 28-year old the best women’s soccer player in the world.

Following that, Just Women’s Sports detailed Mewis’ ascension and explained why that ranking will make sense, if it doesn’t already.
As the Courage look to make another run at the NWSL championship, Mewis’ return should come at just the right time.
