Sam Kerr is reportedly heading Stateside, as the 32-year-old Australian striker prepares to join defending NWSL champion Gotham FC on a free transfer after her Chelsea contract expired.
Kerr announced her WSL exit in May, capping a six-and-a-half-year run that featured five league titles, three FA Cups, and 116 goals across 158 appearances — tied for the most in club history.
Kerr made her US debut with the Western New York Flash (now the NC Courage) in 2013, before joining Gotham precursor Sky Blue FC in 2015. She subsequently went on to become the league’s top regular-season scorer with Chicago before departing for London in 2019.
Gotham preceded the midseason move by trading reigning Rookie of the Year Lilly Reale to 2026 expansion side Boston in exchange for $350,000 in allocation money.
The signing reunites Kerr with ex-Chelsea teammates Jess Carter, Ann-Katrin Berger, and Guro Reiten in New York/New Jersey, while also bringing her wife — former USWNT and Gotham star Kristie Mewis— back to the US.
Gotham currently sits fifth in the NWSL standings, and recently announced plans for a new $35 million training center as the reigning champs build towards the future.
