The Kansas City Current have acquired star USWNT midfielder Sam Mewis in a trade with the North Carolina Courage.
As part of the deal for Mewis announced Tuesday, the Current sent defender Kiki Pickett and the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 NWSL Draft to North Carolina. The Courage also received the discovery rights to defender Malia Berkely in exchange for their seventh overall pick in 2022. Berkely, the 23-year-old ACC Defender of the Year, is currently playing for Bordeaux in France.
Mewis has long been one of the top midfielders in the sport, being named ESPN’s No. 1 women’s player in the world earlier this year. In five years with the Courage, she helped lead the club to two NWSL Championships, three NWSL Shields and an International Champions Cup. In 69 matches for the club, Mewis tallied 15 goals and nine assists.

“Sam Mewis has proven herself as one of the best soccer players in the world,” Kansas City co-owner Angie Long said in a release. “It’s not a coincidence that everywhere she’s played throughout her career, titles have followed. She’s a leader on and off the field and we are thrilled to have her join the Current as a key contributor to help bring NWSL championships to Kansas City.”
Mewis is the latest big-name player to join the Current after the club made another blockbuster move in July to acquire Kristen Hamilton, Hallie Mace and Katelyn Rowland from North Carolina in exchange for Amy Rodriguez. The club also acquired goalkeeper Adrianna Franch in a trade with Portland in August.
“I’m really excited to start this new chapter with Kansas City,” Mewis said. “I know how much the city has embraced our sport and I can’t wait to meet the fans. I’m honored to be part of what this group is doing and I’m really looking forward to getting started with my new teammates. I have a lot of confidence in this team already and can’t wait to get to work. Go Current!”
Pickett, selected fourth overall in the 2021 NWSL Draft, made 16 appearances for Kansas City and played the seventh-most minutes on the team this past season.
The Courage finished the year sixth in the NWSL standings before losing in the quarterfinals, while the Current came in last in their debut season as an NWSL franchise. In October, Kansas City announced its plans to build a new $70 million stadium, the first made specifically for an NWSL team.
On top of her duties with the national team and now the Current, Mewis also co-hosts the Just Women’s Sports podcast Snacks with USWNT teammate and former Courage teammate Lynn Williams.
