San Diego Wave saw its five-game winning streak end Sunday in a 2-2 draw against Boston Legacy at Snapdragon Stadium. The result leaves the Wave three points behind Gotham FC in the NWSL standings and Shield race, with just one match left ahead of the playoffs.
Second-Half Chaos Decides Wave vs Legacy
After a scoreless first half interrupted only by a Lia Godfrey goal wiped out on VAR review, the match broke open. Boston Legacy's Annie Karich converted a rebound in the 48th minute for her first goal of the season. San Diego's Gia Corley answered just three minutes later with a low finish off a Melanie Barcenas run to level the scoreline.
The Wave briefly reclaimed the lead through a Laís Araújo own goal in the 54th, but Alba Caño's long-range strike in the 73rd earned Boston the equalizer.
Despite the draw, the NWSL Shield remains within reach for the home team. Sitting in second with 55 points, San Diego must now beat Bay FC on Decision Day. They'll also need Gotham FC (with 58 points) to lose to Utah to keep things interesting, otherwise, Gotham clinches the title outright.
For Boston Legacy, who were eliminated from NWSL playoff contention last month, the road point adds some needed momentum heading into the offseason.
