Satou Sabally is returning to Dallas, she told ESPN on Tuesday.
The Wings star, who won Most Improved Player last season and finished fifth in MVP voting, was a restricted free agent this offseason. And while she says that she “kept an open mind” in the process, according to ESPN, she wants to win a championship in Dallas.
Since relocating from Detroit, the franchise has yet to win a title. They won three titles in Detroit in 2003, 2006 and 2008.
“Just engaging in those basketball conversations really made us realize that we want to work together and we want to bring a championship to Dallas,” Sabally told ESPN. “It could really be termed as unfinished business.”
A source also told ESPN that the one-year deal is worth $195,000. Last season, Sabally posted career highs in points (18.6), rebounds (8.1), assists (4.4) and steals (1.8). She also had 14 double-doubles, good for fifth best in the league, and improved her three-point shooting from 23.3% the season before to 36.1% in 2023.
According to ESPN, six other WNBA teams inquired about Sabally. As a restricted free agent, Dallas would have had the opportunity to match any offer that the organizations extended to her.
“The most important thing for me next year is really finishing the mission of actually being the greatest team in the league and being a leader, developing as a leader, and really paving the way for the future,” Sabally said. “I think the WNBA is at such an amazing point right now in women’s sports and history, so being one of the faces that can be part of that is such an honor to me.
“I’m grateful to be able to come back to a place that I call home. That is also super special and something I’ve worked hard for, so I’m just really excited and happy.”
