The United States made history on Wednesday, capturing the first-ever gold medal in 3×3 basketball at the Olympics.
Team USA — made up of WNBA stars Allisha Gray, Kelsey Plum, Stefanie Dolson and Jackie Young — took down the Russian Olympic Committee 18-15 in the competition’s inaugural gold-medal game.
Dolson led the team with seven points. Plum contributed five points in the final game, adding to her 55 total points for the tournament.
In 5-on-5 basketball, Team USA is competing for its seventh-consecutive Olympic gold medal. When asked what it felt like to be a part of the first gold-medal winning team of what could be the next American basketball dynasty, Dolson let the gravity of the moment sink in.
“It just gave me goosebumps, honestly,” Dolson said on the NBC broadcast after the game. “It’s always special to be the first of anything, but basketball runs deep in the USA blood, so for us to have this accomplishment as well, to hopefully start something, is really special.”
The U.S. ended the competition with an 8-1 record, dropping a single game to Japan during pool play.
